Prologue & The Basement

The opening chapter. You wake in a dimly lit basement with no memory of how you arrived. This area functions as a hands-on tutorial — no instructions appear on screen. You must discover that ceiling fixtures can be detached and carried by simply approaching them and pressing the interact key. The Basement introduces the concept that light is not just illumination but the primary tool of survival.

WaterWorks

An abandoned indoor water park. The pool is drained and the fluorescent lighting flickers inconsistently. WaterWorks introduces multi-source puzzles: several sensor panels require two light sources illuminating them simultaneously. The entity makes its first full appearance here — previously only glimpsed in peripheral vision in The Basement.

Childhood Memories

The emotional and mechanical climax of Episode 1. A children's play area that should feel safe but has been warped by memory degradation. Slides lead to impossible destinations. Climbing frames extend beyond the ceiling. The familiar children's song plays backwards in certain rooms. This chapter introduces the TV portal mechanic: certain television screens can be activated by illuminating them, transporting you between memory fragments within the same level.

❓ Is Subliminal a full game or just a demo? ▾
The full game launched on Steam on March 31, 2026. Prior to launch, a free demo (Episode 1 Demo) was available. The full release includes all episodes beyond the demo content.
❓ Is Subliminal related to Superliminal? ▾
No. Subliminal (developed by Accidental Studios, published by Gone Shootin and Infini Fun) and Superliminal (developed by Pillow Castle Games) are completely unrelated games. They share a similar-sounding name but have different gameplay, stories, and developers.
❓ How many languages does Subliminal support? ▾
Subliminal supports 14 languages: English and Simplified Chinese have full audio dubbing. The remaining 12 (Traditional Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese-Brazil, Turkish, Polish, and Arabic) have interface localization and subtitles.
❓ Does Subliminal support Steam Deck? ▾
Steam Deck compatibility was listed as Unverified at launch. The game runs on Steam Deck but may require manual graphics settings adjustment — Lumen in particular is demanding on the Deck's AMD APU.
❓ Is Subliminal available on PS5 or Xbox? ▾
Yes. Subliminal is planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, in addition to the PC Steam release. Console release dates had not been officially confirmed as of the PC launch date.

Yes. Subliminal supports SteamVR and OpenXR. A minimum of an Nvidia RTX 2070 is recommended for VR play. The VR demo was available before the full release and demonstrated the WaterWorks chapter in VR.

Episode 1 has two endings. Ending 1 (Early Escape) is accessible in WaterWorks and is considered the 'bad' ending. Ending 2 (Full Circle) is the true ending, achieved by completing all three memory fragments in Childhood Memories.
❓ How long is Subliminal Episode 1? ▾
On a first playthrough with exploration, expect 45 to 60 minutes. Speedrunners can complete Episode 1 in under 18 minutes using Ending 1 (Early Escape) route.
❓ Can you die in Subliminal? ▾
Yes, but death is rare and non-punishing. Getting caught by The Figure sends you back to the most recent checkpoint — typically the entrance of the current sub-area. There is no health system; it is a binary caught/not-caught state.
❓ Does Subliminal have multiple difficulty settings? ▾
No traditional difficulty settings exist. The game instead offers an optional accessibility mode that adds subtle directional indicators for sensor panel puzzles and reduces entity aggression speed.
